Let's talk Mattresses...

(image from Pinterest)

Or better yet, let's talk RESTFUL sleep and the fact that I have been getting next to none!     Why does it seem like things made "today" are made on purpose to fail quickly?   Why are appliances, mattresses and etc NOT like they were when are parents were young and lasted 20 years or more?   Case in point:  John and I have been married for less than 14 years and we just purchased our 4th set.  Doesn't that seem ridiculous?  Ok, well if I am perfectly honest we had 5, but I returned that one after 24 hours.  It felt like we were sleeping on concrete!

I'm starting to feel like the princess and the pea.  But this is not just a comfort issue, it's a construction issue as well!  The other three, have all had body impressions so deep that you can't stand it. One had body impressions with NO pillow top!  The one we have now is a "plush" and the springs are literally bulging against the side of the mattress!   Seems ridiculous to me that it would do this after 3 years.

I am waking up with such shoulder and neck pain that I can't take it.  And my hands go numb almost every single night and from what I have read, it seems as though my bed has no support (which is true) and my back is completely out of alignment.  Some nights I start out in my bed, move to my daughters room and even move to the couch!!    I have scoliosis  and it usually never bothers me, but it is now with this terrible mattress.

So I did  something radical this time.  I didn't just wing it though.  I have researched until my eyes were burning for many nights and hours online.  I ordered a mattress and two different toppers, of two totally different materials that I have never even touched let alone laid on.   I know this seems completely insane but I am at my witts end!   I ordered a medium firmness latex mattress, a 3 inch latex topper in "soft" firmness and a 2 inch gel infused memory foam topper.  And I am PRAYING this is going to work.

I don't require tons of sleep.  Usually 6-7 hours but it needs to be RESTFUL sleep!  I would LOVE to know what you all are sleeping on.  And if anyone has gone through this agony!

XOXO

First off~6-7 hours of sleep only??! I need about 9 or I am an evil witch!

Our mattress is 25 years old. My daughter is a designer/salesperson at a high end furniture store and tells me that mattresses need to be replaced every 10 years because of dust, allergens and weak springs. Our mattress is quite firm, hubby likes that, I like softer ones but this one has never really bothered me much, but I will insist on a softer one next time. I can see why you are looking for the perfect one with your back problem.

I keep track of the months that things go on sale and February is the month for mattresses. If we didn't have the expense of my daughter's upcoming wedding, I'd be out looking for one now!

Good luck,sweetie!

XO,
Jane

I bought our mattress after 33 weeks of bedrest when I was pregnant with the twins - they turned 22 in December. I'm trying to remember what kind it is - I bought it through 1-800-mattres (leave off the last s for savings - lol! remember those ads?)

It's a pillow top of some sort and still in great condition. I do have horrible back and shoulder problems, but that's from lifting and helping my 189 lb son transfer! I flip it regularly - usually once a month or so, alternating directions.

I have friends who SWEAR by those memory foam mattresses, but my son's PT says those are very bad for people with scoliosis.

I hope your new mattress brings you lots of restful slumber!

I was having the same issues with pain about a year ago. My arms would fall asleep and my neck and shoulders would always hurt. Andrew and I did something radical, we know, but we ordered an organic platform bed through Green Conscience Home and Garden in Saratoga. This mattress does not have a box spring or any foreign chemicals or toxins. You can customize the inside to your liking (for firmness) and try the mattress out at the store. The inside has a layer of wool, which is a natural flame retardant. The platform bed is much lower to the ground than a conventional mattress, so it seems odd at first, but you get used to it and it's amazing! I haven't had any body parts falling asleep since, and no more neck/shoulder pain. I sleep much more soundly now, too!

I feel your pain Kristi we're going though the same thing right now! We just have to find the time when we can go together and look for new mattresses, IT BETTER BE SOON!! My current mattress is a firm and I hate it! I get better sleep on the couch then I do in my own bed. When we were away this summer the hotel had a fabulous mattress, it was a Sterns & Foster it was like sleeping on a cloud so that's what we're looking for. Hope your new mattress works for you:)

We have had the same problems! My niece has been the recipient of several of our 'old' beds (less than 3 years old each time)! We have a very old queen mattress in our guest room that we added a topper to and it's great. If we weren't so used to a king mattress, we'd use that one. They do not make them like that anymore.

Good luck in your quest! I'll be eager to hear how your new configuration works!

I'm not a mattress expert, but I do find I sleep better on a little bit firmer one. Hope you can find one that works well for you!

We went through this dilemma about six months ago. Our 12 year old pillow top mattress was shot; springs poking into my hips and I'd spend half the night in the recliner, rather than suffer. After much agonizing research, we decided a memory foam mattress was our best choice. I had slept on my daughter's several times and slept very well. One of the websites I checked indicated that there were mattresses sold by Costco that were comparable to the Tempurpedic. I went to the mattress store and found the Tempurpedic I liked (the Cloud) and called the customer service number for Costco mattresses. I learned that the Ara 13" mattress was most like the cloud and was much less expensive. I ordered it, and we've just finished the sixth month sleeping on it. I would say that it has been a resounding success. I no longer wake up in excruciating pain.

I was having horrible problems with my back and shoulder. We ended up springing for a tempurpedic and I wanted to not like it because I didn't like the price tag but the truth is I love it and my back and shoulder problems are so much better and I sleep like a baby. It turns out to have been money well spent.

Okay the very best mattress out there is tempur pedic. I couldn't afford the price tag sooo good ole Walmart sells a great knock off (on-line). http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-12-Theratouch-Memory-Foam-Mattress/10086752 I loved it so much bought second one for my Dad (89 at the time). I have had health issues aka back injury, fibromyalgia, degenerative disk and nerve damage. Sleeping was until new mattress anything but restful and hurt worse in morning after sleeping (tossing) all night.

Firmer is not necessarily better. There is a common sentiment that a firm bed is good for the spine. In fact, this is not the case. A very firm mattress doesn’t “give” which can force your spine to bend at the hips and shoulders. A softer (more plush) mattress can allow your hips and shoulders to sink into the bed slightly, keeping your spine straight when you sleep on your side. Don’t confuse firmness with supportive – they’re two different things. Like Goldilox, sometimes it’s best to pick the mattress that is not too firm and not too soft (plus) but somewhere in the middle: just right.Futon Burlington

Wellllllll, we have been fighting this battle for two years. We bought a higher end Sealy "plush". It has two "cavity's" where we sleep....even the little kitty has a depression where she sleeps at the head of the bed. I will be glad to keep up with the outcome of your search. My back needs all the help it can get!!!
Thanks for your research and I hope you get lots of ZZZZZZZZZZ's soon!!

i TOTALLY RELATE TO YOUR STORY. Just got our 3rd set. going on 16 years of marriage.

Rick said...

I've had two sets for aprox 15 years. I swapped out with the quest room about five years ago. I know commercials say to replace in 6-8 years. Really? I have no complaints of my beds but I do tend to sleep with too many pillows which do cause me neck and shoulder issues. I sleep on my sides and move about a lot so I've heard that Tempurpedic is not for me.
Good luck in your search for a good nights sleep.

I just bought a Sleep Number bed that you can elevate the head and/or foot sort of like a glorified hospital bed! Main reason is I have GERD and need the head of the bed elevated, still finding my perfect Sleep "Number". Good Luck with your new mattress.

I don't know whether I should be happy or sad to know that I'm not the only one who's gone through this. Difficulty in getting out of bed and springs digging into your back are definitely not fun. Anyway, kudos for doing the research, but now the real question is whether or not the combo works. -Brad @ The Bedding Mart

It’s great that you finally decided to purchase a new mattress. It’s never fun to sleep in a bumpy mattress. Anyway, the mattresses have an average life span of six to seven years before the comfort levels start declining. And it also depends on the people using it. That being said, you really have to change it when it starts to feel uncomfortable. That way, you’re sure that you'll get a good and relaxing sleep all the time. Thanks for sharing!
